Suntory Ltd., founded in 1899, has long been famous for its superior whiskies, which are easily as good as the Scotch ones. Suntory is currently an international operation with branches in Europe, America, China, etc. Although its core business is still whisky, it also produces soft drinks and mineral waters. The firm also owns restaurants, hamburger chains and has a pharmaceuticals division. It has a workforce of around 5000.

In 1989 a horticultural division was set up with the object of launching completely new concepts in the field of plant material and marketing.

Suntory is responsible for major innovation in this field.The Suntory Flower Division currently employs some 20 staff, six of whom are breeders / researchers.Suntory Flower Division cooperates with partners throughout the world.They work closely with local partners such as collectors, botanical gardens, professional breeders and amateur breeders in the development of new plant varieties. A breeding plan is preceded by a thorough study of the relevant literature, before the necessary contacts are made.

This breeding work has resulted in numerous hybrids of many different varieties and genuses. Possible candidates for are only chosen for further climate related testing following a lengthy selection procedure. It can take up to five years before an end product emerges.
